Sancerre, flagship of the Centre-Loire appellations, will be celebrating as of Sunday January 19, just before the big day Wednesday, January 22, for the occasion of the unmissable Saint-Vincent. The village comes out of its winter torpor for this traditional celebration. Parades, Mass in honor of the patron saint, tastings and joyful meetings around tables where we meet with pleasure… Saint-Vincent gives beautiful colors to the famous Sancerre peak and in the wine-growing villages of the appellation, which are not to be outdone: in the evening, balls are organized, enough to warm up the winter! The House of Joseph Mellot of course also celebrates this beautiful patronal festivity.
A bit of history…
Saint-Vincent is celebrated in numerous wine regions of France on January 22nd of each year, in memory of Saint-Vincent of Saragossa, patron saint of winegrowers, who lived in the 4th century. Despite the persecutions suffered by this deacon, he kept his head high and died as a martyr; since then he has been considered by everyone to be the protector of those who work in the vineyards. Long celebrated since the Middle Ages in wine villages, Saint-Vincent is gradually falling into disuse. In Sancerre, it was established in 1842, at the creation of the Sancerre brotherhood of Saint-Vincent, growing every year, becoming an unmissable annual meeting, as in most wine regions of France.
“For Saint-Vincent, winter either goes away or begins again”.
The date of January 22 corresponds to a seasonal transition period, when the vines come out of hibernation and the vegetation begins a new cycle which will allow the harvest of beautiful grapes at the end of the following summer… In the past, Saint-Vincent corresponded with the first trims for the pruning of the vines!
