The holiday season has arrived and with it the feasts that will reunite crowds of gourmands and epicureans, from all generations, around beautifully set tables. Whether a small group or a larger gathering, over the top or in all simplicity, this period of winter festivities is the occasion for meals made with love, according to one’s means and tastes.
Some immutably play the local or family traditions card, while others reflect weeks in advance to imagine a theme that will surprise their guests.
All have something in common: to seek the perfect pairings to accompany their holiday menus with particularly well selected wines.
The Centre-Loire wine region is rich in varied terroirs which give the most beautiful expressions of the leading variety here which is Sauvignon. From Sancerre to Menetou-Salon, passing through Pouilly-Fumé, Reuilly, Quincy… an array of white wines that will beautifully escort numerous holiday dishes.
Starting with oysters, seafood and crustaceans which often abound on festive tables. Several options are offered to you with the white wines of Sancerre: you may for example opt for La Gravelière 2018, or Domaine des Emois 2018, certified organic.
Perfect holiday products, scallops can be accommodated in a thousand ways, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, raw or cooked medium. To honor this noble mollusk, choose between Les Vignes du Rocher 2016 with its frankness at the mouth, precise and intense, full of minerality, the Cuvée Pierre-Etienne 2016 whose finish reveals a beautiful minerality with saline accents, or L’Original 2016, with its complex and sturdy mouth, extended by a hint of sterling salinity.
If you follow with a main course such as a citrus roasted capon, or saffron monkfish, accompany it with a Grande Châtelaine 2015, whose complexity will offer the ultimate pairing! With its powerful and elegant nose, and its wooden touch, it will also marvelously pair with an aged Comté when passing on to the cheese course.
If you would like to taste a Sancerre La Châtellenie 2018, imagine a salt crusted bass or stir-fried langoustines, or wait for the cheese, choosing then the local star of cheese plates, the Crottin de Chavignol AOC.
As for Pouilly-Fumé, the Cuvée des Edvins 2015 will go very well with scallops, sweetbread, salt crusted bass, as well as during the cheese course with Comté and Crottin de Chavignol AOC. This would also be the case for our Troncsec 2018, which very well pairs with citrus poultry. The Domaine des Mariniers 2018 will be a judicious choice for seafood.
The AOC Menetou-Salon also holds treasures, like our Clos du Pressoir 2018, perfect with langoustines and other crustaceans.
Finally, with the very aromatic, 100% Chasselas white wines from Pouilly-sur Loire, explore a fine pairing with a stir-fried veal or poultry with mushrooms.
…Or accompanied dressed in red
If the Joseph Mellot house offers a large selection of white wines, it also proposes beautiful red wines, 100% Pinot noir, elegant as desired. Our red Sancerre Le Connétable 2015, with its harmonious wooden notes, its delicate structure and its beautiful freshness with a beautiful persistence in mouth, will go marvelously with a white truffle risotto, a raisin stuffed quail or with duck à l’orange.
If you are more for duck breast with morello cherries or a nut crusted rack of lamb, it is best served with a Rabault rouge 2017, with its firm frame and fine and silky tannins.
Lovers of crusted pâté will delight with a Domaine des Chaintres 2017 and its garnet red colored robe and delicate structure with tight and harmonious tannins.
We could indefinitely extend these holiday wine pairings, evoking for example promising pairings with the white wines of Reuilly and Quincy from our winery Jean-Michel Sorbe, but it is time to take action, grab a basket, and go shopping.
After your visit to our boutique La Vigne et Le Vin, get settled in the kitchen… and serve yourself a good glass of Quincy Jean-Michel Sorbe!
